I Am Nobody
by Jackie Johnson

I do not possess the steady hands of a surgeon,
Nor the great mind of a philosopher.
I do not own the true arm of an athlete,
Nor the lilting voice of a singer.
I do not maintain the charismatic leadership of a politician,
Nor the commanding presence of an actor.
I do not hold the perfect balance of a gymnast,
Nor the unfailing timing of a comedian.
I do not boast the historic strategies of a general,
Nor the creative palette of a chef.

In this earthly world,
I am bland and colorless.
Too average in a world obsessed with heroes.
Quiet, common, a nobody.

But here is a secret I possess
That keeps me impervious to this nothingness.
Jesus knows my name.
