As a Child
by Lewis E. Thomas

A child comes forth in innocence
From the very start
No stain or unclean thing
Yet written upon their heart.

Like an Angels garment
Their heart is of purest white
Their eyes are shinning brightly
With God's holy light.

We can see the holiness of God
When we look into their face
Yet with no knowledge of sin
To slow them in life's race.

Their innocence is so precious
We hate to watch them grow
Because innocence slips away
Though we try to stop it so.

God commands us to teach them
As their little footsteps trod
To write upon their hearts
All the things of God.

God says that we must all
Become humble just like them
If we want to go to Heaven
And sing those holy hymns.
