I ASKED GOD, WHY?
by Lewis E. Thomas

Walking through a cemetery I paused here and there
My life with the dead I tried to compare.

I'll be thirty-seven years old in a few days
Why am I alive and not in the grave?

Why have I been blessed with so much time?
When a child lies yonder, dead at age nine?

An infant boy lives one year and a day
Why has the Lord allowed me to stay?

I leaned against a tree and thought for a while
Why does God allow the death of a child?

"Lord, why would you let a little one die?"
Then from God's throne I heard this reply;

"Son, the world has grown wicked, so very wild"
"I must save some while they're still a child."

"Son, children are innocent, humble, they are so neat!"
"When they are young, they are really sweet!"

My voice can speak to the heart of a child
"But some will grow deft when they're old and vile."

"I look into the future to their last day"
"I must take some early; before they can stray"

"A child is a gift I send from above"
"But many are abused and never know love"

"Many of them die while still in the womb"
"A trash bin will become their only tomb"

"All these dead children are in heaven with me"
"If you'll remain faithful one day, you will see."

"As you witness the death or grave of a child"
"Please hold your tears and weep for the wild."

"Though it be your only child, always think of me"
"I sent my only son, to die just for thee!"

"Heaven has no place for the wicked and vile"
"To enter Heaven, you must become as a child!"
