I Must Go East
by Lewis E. Thomas God gave me the command to get up and go To a people far away, folks I don't know. "There is a need there!" God said to me When you get there, this you will see. My son, there may be violence on every side But you are my messenger, no need to hide. Though you face death my son, do not fear! I will go with you, I'll always be near. Speak the words that I put in your mouth Speak them to the North, East, West, and South. Be wise as a serpent, gentle as a dove Reach out to everyone and give them my love. You must get going, there's much work to do The harvest is white, but the laborers are few. It will be a dangerous, hard path to trod As you train to be a soldier for God.
