If Only You Knew
by Lewis E. Thomas

You're up this morning and on your way
It's the beginning of a brand new day.

You pass a mother with a babe in arms
You feel secure with no alarm.

You walk on down the busy street
If only you knew who you were about to meet.

You walk along so straight and fast
Not knowing today will be your last.

A distant train blows long and loud
You've been successful, you are proud.

Just ahead is a flower stand
It's owner an old gray haired man.

As you pass by a Rose bows its head
It knows what waits you just ahead.

That beautiful Rose turns a scarlet red
It knows in a moment you'll be dead.

It grieves as it looks into your past
Someone told you of Jesus, you just laughed.

Christ could have been your shield of protection
You chose to go in another direction.

DEATH has drawn his sword for you
Oh! If you only; if you only knew!

Many walk by him, DEATH pays them no mind
His appointment with you, he must keep on time!

Matters not if your pockets hold silver or gold
DEATH strikes the young as well as the old.

DEATH'S glittering sword is silent and fast
He's waiting for you and you're walking so fast!

Suddenly, a cold wind, from where you cannot tell
You'll die without Christ; you'll go to Hell.

DEATH stands unseen; you're too close too run!
Take one more step; your life will be done!
