PENNY
by Lewis E. Thomas

I knew she was out there somewhere
Waiting just for me!
I knew not her name was Penny
Nor where she might be.

I looked here and I looked there
I searched everywhere
I was looking for that Special Lady
Whose love with me she'd share.

At last I think I've found her
My heart said "This is she!"
But my heart was too impatient
And I too blind to see
That this one I thought was Penny
Was never meant to be.

My weary heart was broken
Time and time again!
"Is it possible?" I asked God
"For this shattered heart to mend?"

I was very sad and given to despair
For I could not find the lady
Whose love with me she'd share.

So I just decided to forget the whole thing
To give up looking for the lady
Who'd cherish and wear my ring.

Then one day when I was kinda bored
I stopped by the south side T,G, &Y store.

"All I need is some film!"
I said to the cashier in front of me
But God arranged more than film that day
Because Penny sold it to me!
