That Nasty Hard Test
by Lewis E. Thomas

Lord, you know that this is such a bad day
You see, Johnny my pet turtle, just ran away.
My tricycle got stuck in that nasty old bog
And Joey fed my popcorn to his slimy old frog!
The dog had seven puppies, for that I was pleased
Now, I'm scratching bites that I got from the fleas!
My cat sharpened her claws on my bestest dress
I dred to tell you about all the rest!
A bird in a tree, it pooped on my head
And my fish yelled, "Feed me or else I'll be dead!
My doll is sick with a case of the flu
Please Mr. Jesus, "Tell me what I should do!"
My ball lost its air; it is as flat as can be
My kite, it got stuck, up in a tree!
My Big Wheel got bent, now it shakes and wobbles
Mom yelled, "Eat slower! I hate it when you gobble!"
Lord, you can see I'm under a lot of stress
I wonder if you're putting me through a hard test?
When this day is over, I know I'll be glad
Nobody has ever had a day that's this bad!
My water pistol was fun, but had a bad leak
Daddy yelled, "Look at this mess! You're up the creek!"
Aunt Molly came by and fussed about my runny nose
Mom caught me driving a nail through the hose!
Lord, it's getting so, that I'm scared to move
I know I'll do something yall will have to reprove!
Jesus, it's finally bedtime, and I need the rest
I hope that I passed that nasty hard test!
