The Eyes of The Master
by Lewis E. Thomas

A Roman soldier was assigned to Jesus that day
With orders from Pilate to take Jesus away.
He was full of hate very vicious and mean
Until he looked into the eyes of the Nazarene.
Jesus' eyes pierced way down deep into his soul
Uncovering secret things that had never been told.
While driving the nails tears fell from the eyes
Of this Roman soldier who'd believed all the lies.
He thought, "Never a man had eyes like this!"
He looks into my soul and nothing is missed!
The Centurion gave command to lift up the cross
His men obeyed quickly because he was the boss!
He listened to the thief say "Lord remember me!"
Something caused the Centurion to fall to his knee.
For three hours it was as dark as could be
For three hours the Centurion stayed on his knees.
The Centurion looked up as he heard Jesus' plea
"My God! My God!, Why hast thou forsaken me?"
Drops of Jesus' blood fell on the Centurions hand
The Roman officer became a totally new man!
Suddenly a great earthquake, he fell to the ground!
Jesus had freed him he no longer was bound!
To bow to the King of Kings he surely would die
But he now pledged allegiance to Jesus on high!
He had driven the nails yes it is true
Jesus forgave him and made him all new.
They say he was charged with treason that day
That Caesar said "Centurion for this you will pay!"
That he said unto Caesar so great and wise:
"I wished you could have looked into those eyes!"
