THE MASTER'S DESIGN
by Lewis E. Thomas

Listen to me soul, hear what I say
I Am the Potter you are the clay.

Struggle not but please yield in my hand
I want to mold you into a good man.

My Potters wheel it turns ever so slow
Listen my child I want you to know.

Sometimes you struggle against the Master's hand
As I try to shape a vessel so grand!

When I allow suffering let it be a sign
That I'm molding you into my Master design.

You have many flaws that I must erase
Suffering is what yields such splendor and grace!

My design says remove clay here and there
To produce a beautiful vessel beyond compare.

Child heed my word and follow my instruction
Lest ye become a rejected vessel of destruction.

When problems come just kneel down and pray
Like water your tears will soften the clay.

Soft clay shapes easily in the Potter's hand
Look at you now my vessel so grand!
