WHAT IS IT?
by Lewis E. Thomas

There is one thing in life that makes life worthwhile
When it is present, it always brings forth a smile.
It is often found glowing on a mother's face
As her infant lies nursing in her tender embrace.
Sometimes it causes tears to fall from a person's eye
It often brings grief when one close has to die.
It can bring the toughest man down to his knees
Make him cry and beg and say, "Pretty please!"
Many have clung to it when they had no hope
It is a lifeline stronger than the greatest rope.
It brings bride and groom together as man and wife
It has caused many to risk their very life.
It can take the fearful and suddenly make them brave
Make them charge forth to save one from the grave.
It has often caused many folks to dance and sing
Yet it cannot be purchased it is a priceless thing.
It is often symbolized by a heart bordered with lace
It glimmers and it sparkles on every baby's face.
It cannot be held or placed in the hand
It dwells in the heart of every woman and man.
It has great endurance and it just never gives up
It is the heart beat of a frolicking pup!
It makes the squirrel chatter, it makes the robin sing
Those who possess it are much richer than a King.
It is often confused with the fleshly emotion of lust
But, unlike old lust, in it you can trust.
It will always be reaching out to someone in need
It will deny self and stay clear of greed.
It was expressed in fullness by our Lord Jesus Christ
When he gave himself for all, a holy sacrifice.
You may think you have experienced this thing called love
But, just wait until you meet God's sweet Heavenly Dove.
Love is the strongest force known to us on earth
It entered into the world when Mary gave birth.
Many think they've known love on the path they trod
But, no person ever knows love, until they know God!
God is Love!
