To Be or not to Be
by Janet Riley

Our value is based on the fact that we are children of God. Our being is based on that love relationship.

Society, others and often, we ourselves, will base our sense of value and worth on what we do. If I have a good day at work, and all goes well, I am at the top of the world.

If I make mistakes and embarrass myself, then I am down in the depths of despair. To judge value that way is to be on an emotional roller coaster, that goes up and down depending on external circumstances.

If my value is based on who I am as a child of God, then life is much more stable. I do not roll every way the wind blows, constantly changing direction and value based on circumstances.

One time when I was really having a hard time at a job, a counselor drew a chart for me. It was a piece of paper with a line down the middle. On one side, he wrote BEING, and on the other side he wrote DOING.

On the DOING side he wrote some of the roles I had, in my family, as a spouse, at work, in other activities. How do we usually introduce ourselves? It is usually be saying what job we do, paid or unpaid, volunteer, in the home, or in an office.

Basing my value on the DOING side was like standing on shifting sand. There was a lot of slipping and sliding and no firm foundation.

On the BEING side there was one phrase - Child of God. A stable platform, that did not change due to circumstances.

Is our identity and sense of self worth, based in BEING, or in DOING?
