The Crinoline Dress
by lynn gipson

Pink ribbons tied into pretty bows,
Adorn my dress of layers and rows,
I must be dreaming because I feel,
Like surely this vision can't be real!

A pauper's daughter when I was born,
Flannel lined jeans I had always worn,
Longing to dress like the girl down the street,
I feared in my heart it would never be.

Worn out clothes and scuffed up shoes,
Always ashamed at Sunday school,
Doll like dresses were worn in those days,
With little black shoes so shiny they glazed.

Praying each night for something pretty,
Then Mama took me into the city,
Suddenly feeling a thump in my chest,
I saw the most beautiful crinoline dress!

I tried it on, and it was just my size,
So pretty I couldn't believe my eyes,
Though Mama smiled at me at the time,
I dared not think it could ever be mine.

Reaching into her sparse pocket book,
For a five dollar bill as her hands shook,
With happy tears she said "It's yours!"
A great sacrifice for a mother so poor.

Next we went to a second hand store,
Where we found what we were looking for,
A shiny pair of Mary Jane shoes,
No one would ever know they were used.

I feel like a princess at church today,
As smiles and ahs are directed my way,
I thank God's grace for a dream come true,
In my crinoline dress and almost new shoes!
