Writing Sexual Scenes- For the Christian Writer
by Marie Grossett "Oh brother how am I going to write this?" Maggie thought, "My characters are about to make love and I don't want to write too explicit. Maybe I should just type they make love but in fiction you must show and not tell what am I going to do?" Maggie is not the only Christian writer that will have problems with writing a sexual scene. There are quite a few Christian writers that do struggle with this. Out of all the work I have critiqued which had scenes of a sexual nature, I can honestly say that only two authors plucked up the courage to describe and not tell and they wrote it beautifully. "How can I overcome this struggle?" I hear you thinking. Well firstly don't be embarrassed about sex. Love making is God given and a beautiful connection between husband and wife. Somehow we Christians have seemed to close the door on talking about this. If love making is even mentioned we get all shy pretending it doesn't exist. Once you get over the embarrassment and realise there is nothing wrong with what God created for husband and wife then you can write the scene without telling but describing. Sample scene: - 'Darren and Sandy came back from their favourite Italian restaurant. They climbed up the marble floor to their cream painted bedroom. They lay facing each other over their white duvet. Darren rubbed his palm on his wife's brown cheek and quoted proverbs 31:29 "Many women do noble things but you surpass them all." He paused then continued "I am so blessed to have you as my wife I love you so much." He poked out his lips and pressed it on Sandy's red lipstick she responded passionately. His hand motioned to her gold zip in which he slowly pulled down and gently removed her arms from the sleeves. Sandy reached for her husband's buttons and undid them she removed his shirt they took a pause for breath, pulled back the duvet and slide underneath the white sheets. ' There you have it a sexual scene not too explicit but is described in a romantic way. Was I nervous or scared to write this? The answer is no as I mentioned before making love is not embarrassing and with sexual scene's you don't need to go too far i.e. she unzipped his trousers, the reader gets the idea with the ending they 'slide underneath the white sheets.' So give it a go don't get nervous. If you're readership are adults then I am sure at some point in their life they have experienced love making, happy writing.
