God's Built-In Plan
by Janet Eriksson

The older I grow, the more I realize God has a built-in plan to draw us to our Savior, Jesus Christ.

In my 20s, I thought I was invincible. I loved the excitement of living on the edge. My energy seemed boundless. I was ready to conquer the world. I had little need of a savior in my life. I thought I was a savior.

As I hit my mid-30s, life became more challenging. Some days were unbearable. I still thought I had to do everything myself. I was nearly crushed under the weight, but I kept pulling myself up and plodding on. If only I had realized a Savior stood waiting to walk that road with me and carry my burdens for me, I could have ridden on His shoulders. Instead I tried to shoulder everything and nearly broke my back trying.

By the time I stumbled into my 40s, I started to notice Jesus standing there. I wondered if He had some alternate plan to offer, because mine wasn't working. I wasn't sure, though. Not sure I could trust Him. Not sure I had a right to quit from my own efforts at making life happen. I started to give Him my heart, little by little. Started to taste the sweetness of the rest He offered. Longed for more, even as my hands and feet still grappled with burdens I was unwilling to set down.

Now, pushing 50, I've realized I can't do it anymore. Not on my own. I need a Savior. Amazingly enough, we have one! He is ready to step in and bring new life. Where my strength has failed, His is everlasting, always fresh and filled with life, like a breeze in early spring. He soars like an eagle; all I have to do is rest on His back. Forget that He can carry all the burdens I toted for so long. He can carry me too.

As I surrender my life to Him, asking Him to live in me and through me, I finally see it: God's built-in plan. So often, we think we can and should do it all ourselves. As our bodies, minds, and emotions wear out, we realize we can't do it at all. Maybe, just maybe there's someone who can. He is our Savior. We need Him.

I see the built-in plan, and I smile. You're amazing, God.
