No Merit Badge
by PamFord Davis Do you give money to panhandlers? At times, they pull at our heartstrings; we are indifferent on other occasions. What makes the difference? We go with our gut feelings; at best, we follow the gentle nudging and divine discernment of the Holy Spirit. We easily grow indifferent, becoming cynical and suspicious. We might be more generous if we knew the ones asking for handouts deserved our donations. Does the Father give based on what I deserve? "You have heard that it was said, 'You SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR, and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you in order that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous (Matthew 5:43-45 NAS)." His blessings to me are generous and undeserved.
