AN APE NAMED TIM
by Maurice A. Williams

His sad, unthinking, staring eyes,
Protruding brow, receding chin;
Colossal strong gorilla sighs.
Why must I stare at him?

Am I Australopithecus,
Piltdown, Neanderthal,
Or maybe Zinjanthropus,
Evolving ape, that's all?

There's more, I'm sure, that makes a man
Than flesh and skin and bone.
I love! I weep! I think! I am
Like Tim: don't want to be alone.
