FROM HANUKKAH TO CHRISTMAS
by Sylvia Maltzman

From Hanukkah to Christmas
a mere 167 years,
a grain of sand on the vast strand of time;
an insufficient cup of oil became enough
to rekindle the hope of Meshiach, Messiah,
the oil-annointed One.

And then a baby was born,
an insufficient-looking newborn,
heralded by a single star, just one celestial ember
burning among uncountable others,
a lone candle in the heavens.

And then, through His mortality, came His gift,
His grace, all-sufficient to cleanse the temple of the soul,
rebuild the altar of the heart.

The holy light has been kindled;
tongues of fire have descended
on the human menorah in the upper room.

O come and adore Him,
the Meshiach,
the Anointed,
the all-sufficient One.
