Dangerous Comparisons
by Jeff Ferris For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise. (II Corinthians 10:12 KJV) There is a dangerous journey to be taken by living in comparison to others. Though the above passage is clearly referencing those who equate themselves in a prideful manner, there is also a counter comparison that is equally as hazardous to our spiritual growth and stability. First is that which is mentioned above: Self-commendation. This is a prideful boast of self-promotion and likely the most popular form of comparing. Many among us look around in a manner which suggests that we are superior to others. We commend ourselves, saying "I am above them." Hence, arrogance and self-righteousness becomes our destructive guide. Conversely, some measure themselves in the form of Self-condemnation. This is a view of self-degradation, shamefully beholding those who are highly talented, more accomplished or well gifted as being of greater significance. We condemn ourselves by insisting "I am beneath them." This comparison brings discouragement and defeat. Regardless of the type, scripture makes it clear that comparing is 'not wise.' Whether producing self-importance or self-destruction, it is harmful to us and to others. Quite possibly, the greatest detriment can be found in the fact that, by viewing oneself in the image of others, we are no longer looking at Christ or reflecting on the word of God as a true and accurate measuring source. work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
