The Journey
by Shakera Reid-Stewart

One night I woke up to find that my world was wrong,
It was frustrating and I was tired of singing that same old sad song.
Upon getting up I discovered a path,
I decided to explore it, in spite of my wrath.

Along the way as I grumbled and sighed,
I met King David as I walked by.
He asked me the problem and I explained away,
Then he asked me to consider what I'd do if I had Goliath to slay.

Somewhere down the road, not much further on,
A man approached me sometime near dawn.
I recognized him as Joseph and he asked me to sit.
Then he asked me to imagine time spent thrown in a pit.
He asked me if I thought that being a slave was an easy thing,
While knowing that you need to still worship and praise and sing.

As I left Joseph and quickly rounded the bend,
Sitting on a bench was Job, Paul, and Adam, sitting at the end.
Job told me of his troubles, how he lost everything from his family down to his boots,
While Adam spoke of heeding warnings of eating forbidden fruits.
Paul simply let me know that prison was not a nice place,
Especially when you had to write letters of encouragement and keep a cheerful face.

As the path began to get brighter I encountered Jesus along the way,
His account of great temptations and healings took up most of the day.
He finally let me know about the nails in His hand,
About the crown of thorns lain on his head as tight as a rubber band.
He spoke of how he suffered and bled,
And how they put him in that tomb after he was dead.
He told me to stop my grumbling and think of how much worse my life could be,
He encouraged me to look around me and then I would truly see.
I would see how blessed I have been even though trials have come.
Comparing my problems to theirs, I realized that I was being dumb.

You see as bad as we may have it,
There will always be that one,
Who has it worse than we do,
When all is said and done.

So count your many blessings,
Each day brings at the very least one
Count your many blessings
Have you seen what He's done?
