Perspectives
by Shakera Reid-Stewart

See the woman who looks like she wants to be seen,
With multicolored hair and clothes so tight, looking like the spandex queen.
See her voluptuous curves and the makeup packed on her face,
One would think that she was a "lady of night", but that isn't really the case.
Would you believe that she's an actress just trying out her role?
Do you know that she's rushing to an audition, and just trying to fulfill a career goal?

Watch that black man as he enters the jewelry store ever so quietly,
Notice how he shuffles about very nervously.
He continues to look around at the door in search of who knows what,
He's probably waiting for the right opportunity to take us for everything we got.
Who would believe that he's planning to propose to the girlfriend of his dreams?
He's looking at the door expectantly for her to arrive it seems.

What style! What grace! She looks so well; she must be one of those important ladies!
She commands respect and folks stare at her as she gets out of her new Mercedes.
Expensive jewelry adorns her pretty little neck, her husband must have bought it,
All these people wouldn't imagine that she'd just taken quite a hit.
You see her husband physically abuses her and yells at her constantly,
She makes a point to hide her bruises, and suffers her hurt secretly.

The fact of the matter is there are so many angles to every situation,
It's really wrong for us to judge based on appearance, wealth, or occupation.
You can never truly know someone just because of your first impression.
This often causes us to miss out on opportunities and head in the wrong direction.
Let's try to keep an open mind and learn about others completely,
Let's try not to stereotype, let's get to know them before talking about them "discreetly".
