I am a teenager of note
by Jack Vorster I am glad that I have finally reached the stage in life where I have a good idea about the career direction I want to take. It is clear from my achievements at school that I have above average intelligence and I intend using my intellectual prowess to carve a name for myself in human society. When I look around me I can't help but wonder why other kids don't seem to have the same devotion as I have in improving their knowledge base to the extent of excellence. Most of them appear to be childish and empty minded if I could put it that way. I've come to realize that I can only attribute my uniqueness to the fact that my parents have instilled in me the desire to be above the rest by supplying me with everything I needed along the way to stand out above everyone else at this point in my life. As far back as I can remember I've always had the latest equipment that modern technology had to offer. From play stations, computers, smart phones, ipads and the wonderful world of the internet yes - I have truly expanded my universe, brain power and focus in life. My parents have busy lives, but they never cease to encourage me and applaud me for my achievements and they certainly have reason to boast about me to family and friends. I suppose that without their dedication to see to my wants and needs I would have been a lesser person. Lately, however, I have been drawn to something quite weird by a friend at school. Apparently he's had some kind of "spiritual" experience that has bowled him over. He just bubbles over about it and he can't seem to get off the subject. He's never been overly bright, but suddenly he has started showing a new enthusiasm for everything to do with school work. He tells me that he has been born again through some character named Jesus Christ and that he now has a totally different perspective on life. He further tells me that he suddenly "saw the light" during a Sunday school class at the church his parents regularly attend. And now he's trying to convince me that "the way, the truth and the life" exists in only one person and that everything in life revolves around that person. And there's also something about me being a sinner and that I needed some kind of salvation process to be redeemed from my inherent condition. I've been mulling it over in my mind and have come to the conclusion that if what he has been telling me is true, then my parents would have alerted me to the fact, for I consider them to be knowledgeable individuals with their finger on the pulse of everything important in life. Not once can I remember them alluding to such nonsense as redemption from sin through a Biblical character and the need for living a godly life of faith in a person who is - supposedly - the Son of God. I do seem to recall that my parents did, in fact, attend a few church services some years back, but they never said anything about it to me. Perhaps they were just looking into it for the sake of curiosity and found it to be something not worth pursuing. Like I said, my parents are intelligent and they would not impose nonsensical stuff on me. They know what they want in life and have been a good example to me, so it appears that my friend at school has parents that haven't a clue about the realities of life and they have been burdening his young life with insignificant side issues that are of no value to his education. My friend's proposed idea that gaining the whole world but losing my own soul rings annoyingly in my ears. However, I see nothing wrong in personal gain and prestige, fun and entertainment and mingling with the rich and famous. My parents have their heads screwed on right and they have set me on the right path. They are very comfortable financially and I intend to reward their faith in me by emulating their own success in life. They have taught me well I hope. Now retired, Jack Vorster has a background in marketing in the field of newspaper advertising. As a result of a life-changing experience he turned his attention to the study of the human make-up and the realities connected to human behaviour based on the Word of God.
