From Caterpillar to Butterfly
by Steve Countryman

It is a miracle that takes place and has nothing to do with evolution! In fact scientist know what takes place in the cocoon but they cannot reproduce the miracle themselves. It is the miracle that closely resembles our lives. To the caterpillar life has it's restrictions. The caterpillar has one job to do and that is to eat and eat. It moves from leaf to leaf eating. The effort and time it takes to move from leaf to stem to leaf is enormous. Their life is limited to the immediate area of their birth. They cannot fly like the butterfly from plant to plant. They don't get to experience flight or have the ability to travel considerable distances with wings. They are confined to their area and task at hand, to eat! Once they have fully grown they form themselves into a pupa or cocoon. That is where the miracle takes place. The change they go through to become a butterfly is where the similarities to our lives becomes closer.

Inside the pupa the caterpillar is transforming into a totally different creature. It will no longer look like or act like it's former self. That is what the Holy Spirit does with each of us. Changing us from glory to glory! We are now a new creature. 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any person is [ingrafted] in Christ (the Messiah) he is a new creation (a new creature altogether); the old [previous moral and spiritual condition] has passed away. Behold, the fresh and new has come!

The caterpillar's transformation is so radical that none of the old recognizable caterpillar remains. As if it died and was replaced by the beautiful butterfly. That is also what we go through as we die to the old sinful nature and behold the new creature has come! To the butterfly the old caterpillar's life doesn't compare to the new found life of freedoms that the butterfly enjoys. Freedom to move about from plant to plant. Freedom to be able to cover bigger areas in very little time. Freedom to fly instead of crawl from leaf to leaf. Likewise, we Christians have freedoms that didn't exist in our caterpillar lives. We are no longer captives of our sins. We are no longer controlled by, influenced by or ruled by our sinful nature. Our past does not define our future. We are now transformed into children of the Most High God!

The butterfly is also a joy to behold in all it's splendor. It's beauty overshadows the lowly ugly caterpillar. You are one of God's prize possessions that He cherishes very much! He loves you with a powerful love. Though you are not perfect, God still loves you with all of your faults, failures and flaws. For He knows and cares for you too much to allow you to stay where you are. God has big and wonderful plans for your new life! A new life of adventure and excitement that is full of faith and power! You will never be the same. Thank you Lord!
