John 20:30-31 Devotional
by Bobby Bruno

"Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name."
John 20:30-31 (NIV)

Before I was saved, I could read the words of Jesus, understand them, and then say to myself, "How could anybody ever follow all of these rules to perfection? How is anyone even supposed to remember them to the letter?" And even though I studied the Bible back in 1981 for a year, I still did not give my life to Jesus, because there was no one around to help me understand what I was reading and learning. I wasn't a churchgoer, so I had no pastor to speak to about these things and there was no one in my life at that time to guide me to church let alone someone in it.

But when I got saved in 1999, the words of Christ opened up to me in a way I had not seen in the past; these words that I had thought of as rules were now a way of life. I understood them, and, with the help of the Holy Spirit, I was able to follow them without a struggle. So, I went back and re-read the Gospels for the "first time" and discovered a Jesus I once thought of as rule-master had now become, for me, a life giver. Yes, Jesus has the words of life and even gives us the desire to live them His way. With the Holy Spirit in me, I read of Jesus' death and resurrection with new eyes. I had never really understood what His dying had meant for me; I had never understood that He was actually God in the flesh come down to save me from death and myself. When I read of the pain and suffering that He went through before He went to the cross, being whipped and scourged, I cried and finally realized what He had done for me. Even though I had just gotten saved, I recommitted my life to Him just to confirm in my own heart that I was, in fact, His.

Since 18 years had gone by between 1981 and when I was saved, I had forgotten all I had read in the Bible through those years, so, when Jesus came to save me, He came to me and not me to Him. With no knowledge anymore of the Bible, Jesus still reached down and gave me life without me knowing anything but His Name. How great is our God that He doesn't wait for us to "learn" everything about Him before He will save us! His story (History) is the only one that gives life without taking anything away that makes us us. I am glad to be telling others His story for they are, indeed, the very words of life.
