Not Just for Grown-Ups
by Abby Kelly "Children, always obey your parents, for this pleases the Lord." Colossians 3:20 When I read Hebrews 11, I feel a little small, a little sheepish. The Bible recounts the faithful feats of many men and women; they seem like giants to me. I could never measure up to men like Noah and Abraham or women like Sarah and Rahab. Sometimes I worry that if things get too hard my faith might crumble. If God asked me to believe Him and build an ark before I even saw a rain drop, would I do it? Where does this faith come from? No one knows exactly who wrote the book of Hebrews, but many scholars think it might have been Paul. A little later in the Bible, we find a letter that Paul wrote to a young man that he cared for very much. Paul felt like Timothy was his own son and he took great care to encourage Timothy and build up his faith. In 2 Timothy 1:5, Paul wrote, "I remember your genuine faith, for you share the faith that first filled your grandmother Lois and your mother, Eunice. And I know that same faith continues strong in you." Timothy's grandmother and mother had taught Timothy about the Savior, Jesus Christ. God gives parents a great responsibility to teach their children about Jesus and to model the love of the Father. But, it is each person's own responsibility to choose to believe in Jesus, to follow Him and to obey Him. Provers 1:8 says, "My child, listen when your father corrects you. Don't neglect your mother's instruction." If you're reading 'Tween Girls and God, you are very blessed; a caring adult is diligently obeying God to teach you from His Word. Be careful to listen closely, ask questions about what you do not understand and spend as much time in God's Word as you can. There's another encouraging verse in the Bible written specifically to young people. 1 Timothy 4:12 says, "Don't let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity." Faith is not something that belongs to grown-ups. In fact, Jesus told his disciples that it is good to have faith like a little child. While you are young, learn from the godly adults God has put in your life. Ask God to grow your faith so that as you get older your faith goes deeper and becomes stronger everyday. Father, thank you for parents who love you and who are obedient to teach us about you. We ask you, Lord, to make us attentive and to increase our desire for you. Also, help us to be obedient to our parents because we know that this pleases you.
