Be Not Afraid
by Susan Ferguson

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?  The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?  (Psalm 27:1 KJV)

Mark Twain said, “I am an old man and have known a great many troubles, but most of them never happened.”  Mr. Twain’s humor is a reminder that most of what you worry about never happens.

Nothing can rob you of your peace and sap your energy levels like worry.  A by-product of fear, worry can take many forms including fear of failure, rejection, people, disaster, or death.  Fear can strike when health issues arise or when a death occurs.  Fear can come knocking when the bank account runs low, and the bills pile up.  Fear can even trap you in believing that your circumstances are hopeless and will never change.

Even the bravest of souls fear something.  David, a man of great courage and strength, dealt with fear and prayed for God’s protection from his enemies.  He sought God’s presence through prayer, praise, and thanksgiving and found relief from fear.  Living in a troubled world, you may have to deal with fear, but you don’t have to live in fear.  If fear strikes, do as David did, and seek God’s presence where there is peace.  The Bible says that God’s love drives out fear.  (1 John 4:18)  If fearful thoughts flood your mind, cast them down and make a choice to trust Jesus.  Freedom from fear requires a way of life that’s centered on Christ.  Jesus is your one constant in life, and He promises never to leave you nor forsake you.  Trust Jesus, for He is trustworthy.

Father, touch those who are dealing with fear or worry and give them peace.  Grant them the assurance of Your care and provision for their lives.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
