The Extensity of Grace
by Yuri Solomon Can you imagine the regrets that pledged Jacob: Can I ever go home? Can I ever be reconciled to my brother? Will I see daddy before he dies? Will my children and their grandparents ever meet? And this meeting of Jacob and Esau had been 20 years in the making. Jacob felt that he had to face the mess he made. And so he did, with great fear and trepidation, anticipating the same anger on the face of Esau that he fled all those years ago. A wrath he not only feared, but he caused, not only caused, but deserved. Yet instead of his expectation, he finds in the face of Esau the grace of God. Esau met Jacob, embraced him, fell on his neck kissed him, and they wept. Isn't those our questions as well: How good is God's grace? How far does its reach? How much does it cover? Does it deal with all the things we fear? Often the greatest torment is our own fear that God's amazing grace is insufficient to cover our past and our future. Jacob went to meet with Esau trying to earn what could not be earned, and trying to pay for what had already been paid for. Jacob discovered that God has more tentacles than an octopus. The grace of God was not only working in him at Uncle Laban's house, but it was working for him back at home. What is grace that will save us in a far country, but will not allow us to go back home?
