How To Not Get Lost
by Abby Kelly

Daddy handed me the car keys, "Sure, you can drive to youth group tonight. Your mom's not feeling well so we're not going to church this evening. Since you're a brand new driver, I don't want your sisters going with you this time, but you can drive yourself."

It was the first Wednesday night since I'd passed my driver's test. I couldn't wait to press the rubber sole of my tennis shoe down on the gas pedal, feel the trusty, white Honda Civic purr to life and rumble reliably down the road. I've got this, I thought!

Suddenly, a thought occurred to me. I turned to Dad. "Um, can you remind me how to get to the church?"

Dad cocked his eyebrow and looked at me, confused. "Abby, we've been going to that church three times a week for almost five years. How do you not know how to get there?"

I hung my head, sheepishly. "I guess I wasn't paying any attention."

I think that's how our prayer conversations go with God sometimes:

God, what am I supposed to do in this situation? How do I please you? Where do you want me to go? How do I respond to this person?

Then God, ever patient with us, says, "Sweetheart, you have known me for some time now. How is it that you don't know the way?"

There are certainly times when we do have to ask God hard questions, we just don't have any idea what to do in certain situations. But, many times we ask God questions that we already know the answer to if we've been paying attention to Him in our daily lives. Reading God's Word, following Him, obeying His leadership through our parentsall these are ways that we learn the heart of God, we learn what He is like and His character.

The best way to know God's will is to pay attention to Him, to listen to Him. We see God show grace, kindness, mercy, generosity and forgiveness. All these things are attributes of God that help us to know the way that He wants us to act, too.

Father, help me to understand your will by spending time with you, paying attention to you and getting to know you. Help me to be more like you. In Jesus Name, Amen.
