Duel Role
by PamFord Davis

Silent movies, weekend matinee cliffhangers featured a distraught young maiden. She was unable to pay the mortgage on her house and the landlord was demanding immediate payment. Moviegoers booed and hissed as they watched the villain bind the innocent woman, before placing her atop train tracks. Would the hero rescue her before she met her demise by an approaching train?

The tale was fiction. In the Bible, the LORD God is both merciful landlord and rescuer, playing a duel role in the everyday lives of His children. He is rightful owner of the world. "The earth is the LORD's and all its fullness, the world and those who dwell therein. For He has founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the waters (Psalm 24:1-2 NKJ)." He owns every blade of grass and fish in the sea; yet, He cares for you and me. Jesus releases the captives

"And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written: The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, because he has appointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD (Luke 4:17-19 NKJ)."
