The Singing Warrior
by KC Lemmer

Zephaniah 3:17 (NIV) 'The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in His love He will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.'

As a child, do you remember standing in the kitchen staring at your mother's favourite plate, scattered into small shards across the kitchen floor, your heart pounding and tears rising at the expected consequences? Yet when your mother hurries in, it is only to gather you in a loving embrace and then gently pick you up, off the floor, and place you on the counter while she swept up the splintered plate.

Zephaniah 3:17 describes God as a 'Mighty Warrior'. He is strong, capable and valiant. There is nothing God cannot do. God can win any battle. Yet, He is a warrior who saves! He doesn't come to condemn but to bring joy and forgiveness. I am awed to think that when I deserve condemnation, when I should pay the consequences of my mistakes (all those broken plates), this Mighty Warrior is with me and delighting in me, not rebuking me. And the verse does not end there, it continues on to say 'but will rejoice over you with singing'.
John 1:12 (NIV) 'Yet to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.' How amazing it is to be a child of our forgiving God, who comes and picks us up, gently puts us in a place of safety, and loves us.
