Hen Yearns for Life on Other Side of the Road
by Greg Miller

Cathy the hen walked across the road every day.

Why do you cross the road every day? inquired Cinnamon the rabbit, her best friend.

I have two reasons, smiled Cathy. My number one reason, of course, is to get to the other side. Im also looking for a more adventuresome spot to lay my eggs.

Im asking because Im concerned about your safety, said Cinnamon. The road is such a dangerous place. Why dont you just look on the side of the road on which you reside?

Dont try to change my mind! Cathy declared. Some cows think the grass on the other side of the fence is greener. For me, its the other side of the road.

Do you mind if I start escorting you on your excursions to the other side of the road?

I dont mind at all. It will just add to the adventure.

Starting the next day, Cathy and Cinnamon were seen regularly crossing the road together, Cathy in her fastest chicken walk, with Cinnamon following closely behind.

Unknown to Cinnamon and Cathy, angels were guiding and guarding their steps. Frequently, Cathy or Cinnamon, or both, were beneficiaries of heavenly rescues, many of which were near misses.

Sometimes my feathers really get ruffled, said Cathy.

And sometimes my fur gets blown out of place, said Cinnamon.

One day, Cathy and Cinnamon realized they were being protected by heavenly forces. The two animals silently praised their Creator.

Cathy discovered what she felt was the perfect place to lay her eggs, and the big day soon arrived. I can only call this spot heavenly, she told Cinnamon.

Cathy faithfully sat on the eggs until they cracked open, revealing the small yellow balls of life inside. Cinnamon sat beside Cathy, offering timely encouragement to her closest friend.

Cathy mothered her chicks until she felt they were ready to be taken to the other side of the road. Today is the day were going home, she clucked to her little ones.

Why are you going back home? asked Cinnamon. I thought you planned to raise your babies on this side of the road.

Ive been thinking about that, Cathy said. Ive decided I really didnt need a change of scenery after all. What I really need is to be where my heavenly father wants me to be and raise my chicks to honor, love, and glorify the Lord.

When we get back to the other side of the road, can we come back over here sometime?

I dont think so. Ive decided to be perfectly happy where God has called me to be! With Him leading me, my life will always be one grand adventure!
