No Slum Lords in Heaven
by Marilyn Schnepp

When my working days were over
I thought I'd be depressed,
But instead my mind and body
Were happy to take a rest.

So I moved to a new apartment
Just made for folks like me;
A "Seniors-Only" hi-rise pad
That fit me to a "T".

Aside from my apartment
Which was cozy as could be,
We had a coffee shop and parlor
And benches 'neath a tree.

We also had a Chapel
And a library down the hall
And Security both night and day
In case we need to call.

Growing old so gracefully,
I really felt quite blessed.
But suddenly it happened...
Something I never guessed!

A Slum Lord bought our building,
His name was Emmanuel Ku,
And before the ink was even dry
Our home was a ghetto too.

First he took away our light bulbs
Then took away our Guards.
And filled our library full of junk
While weeds overgrew our yard.

No janitors or yard help
Our elevators were unkempt
And not a breath of air
Came through the hallway vent.

Managers would come and go,
They never stayed for long;
And if you asked for "Maintenance"
Same song, too bad, they've gone!

Yes, once I was quite happy,
But now I'm glad time's short,
For Mr. Ku will meet THE JUDGE
And answer Him in Court!

Autor's Note:

It is now 5/18/09 - almost two years later, and our trash chutes have been padlocked and the elderly, wheelchair bound, and those on walkers must take their garbage downstairs and outside to the parking lot to dump it in a dumpster. Naked light bulbs hang in the hallways with no lens or shades. The Mop Rooms on all 11 floors have been locked, and the awning in front hangs in tatters and strings.

The writer was threatened with eviction due to retaliation for writing this, but was not legit - so therefore, by the Grace of God...The writer is not homeless as of this date.

2010: This once beautiful building is now a complete wreck; my home is no longer a home....but a ghetto, one step below the curb into a what is known as the Projects. So sad, so pitiful....and nobody cares.
