Lure of Edibles
by PamFord Davis

I frequently use the idiom, 'like a kid in a candy store,' when describing a pleasurable experience. The Lord knows my limitations; I do not think I could resist sampling the merchandise at every opportunity.

Most baby boomers have seen reruns of Lucy & Ethel stuffing their mouths with confections while working on a candy assembly line. When they could no longer cram the candy into their mouths, pockets had to suffice.

I wonder how many times directors had them repeat the scene during filming of that episode.

Did the comedy duo lose their taste for candy?

As a child, I recall yielding to temptation when the lure of edibles surfaced.

My best girlfriend, Carol, had a plum tree in her back yard. The tantalizing fruit beckoned and we ate our fill. To this day, six decades later, I cannot see a plum without thinking of that escapade and the bellyaches that followed.

"But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, and tempted God in the desert. And he gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul (Psalm 106:14-15 KJV)."
