The Book Of John

LEN'S LINES -- A Little Religion On A Positive Note

The Air Force assignment to the beautiful country of Greece was a period in my life, I will always remember. With my wife and our two young children, we lived a couple blocks from the beach on the Mediterranean Sea. Our kids loved to make sand castles in the white sand and we also enjoyed watching the beautiful sunset over the calm blue sea.

A few blocks from our home was the large Greek Eastern Orthodox Church, which is the official church of Greece. As a guest in their country, we were told certain things we could not do including, evangelize the Gospel or give out Bibles to the Greek population.

During our Air Force tour my wife came down with polio and was in Germany for four months while in the hospital. On my last visit to visit her, I was bumped off a flight at Naples, Italy before it crashed and everyone perished. I promised the Lord I would serve Him the rest of my life, but here I was in Greece with all the restrictions. At the Athenia Airport , our small organization. the 7206 Support Group had elaborate dinners, with all the trimmings, for everyone including the Greek employees for Christmas, Easter, and other holidays.

One young Greek lady asked if she could visit our Non-Denominational church on Sunday at the American Embassy, and I said my family would love to have her worship the Lord with us. After the service, we asked how she liked the service? She said having seats in the church was different. Also she noticed everyone carried a Bible, and when the Pastor read from the Bible, we all read along with him. Some church members were asked to pray during the service and the congregation participated in the worship service with singing. Over time she started attending the new found church in her life and wanted a Bible.

As we could not give out Bibles, we came up with an idea; if we could find a willing printer, and it just might work. We would give out a book named, " The Book Of John". The printer said he would print pages and we would need to cut to size and staple in a pamphlet form. No where in the book would his business be listed and we agreed. Three or four of us spent several evenings after work, at one of our homes, as we assembled the Bible Book Of John. With about 100 copies, we gave them to our Greek employees that wanted to improve their English and we never got a complaint.

We often have a reason why we can not serve our gracious and loving Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, but he will guide and protect us, if we ask him. We read in the Bible , Romans 1:16, " For I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ; for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek,"

Trust this Sunday we will all be worshiping our Lord and Savior in the church of our choice.
