The Cleaving Child
by Steve Countryman

To cleave: to adhere firmly and closely or loyally and unwaveringly, to cling to a person or thing closely; The child cleaved to his mother.

It's how I see myself with my heavenly Father, a cleaving child. Like a little child whose father is about to leave and the child runs over to him wraps their arms around one leg and won't let go. Safety, security, trust, faith, hope, protection and love are found in the father and the child knows it.

As Christians we miss the obvious most of the time. When we are facing our troubles and problems we think that we can take care of them ourselves. Leaning on our own understanding and ignoring any help God would otherwise have provided. "God is too busy with world problems to help me with mine." "There are others worse off than me that could use His help." "Who am I that God would want to help me?"

Then there are those times when we pray for God's help and guidance then when He answers our prayers we totally ignore Him. Maybe the answer didn't come the way we expected it to. Or the answer wasn't what we wanted to hear. What if the answer involved us having to let go of something or someone? Letting go of some bitterness, hatred or anger towards someone that we need to forgive and release. Or hanging on to someone so we don't have to be lonely? What about those who you call friends but really could care less about you? Then there are those abusive relationships/friendships that are really destructive and hurtful that you should have left some time ago.

Psalm 55:22 "Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken". 1 Peter 5:7 "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you."

"To cleave to God for help takes surrendering ALL your troubles and problems to Him. To trust in Him as a child trust their parents. "But isn't that being childish towards God?" You are God's child and He wants to be included in ALL areas of your daily life! So cleaving to God is a really good thing to do! It is admitting that you can't do this on your own and need His help and guidance.

Yes parents want their children to grow up and stand on their own two feet. God is no different; He wants you to mature in Him so that you can take ALL that the Holy Spirit provides you with to use as needed. One of those provisions is His mighty Word but you must be willing to spend time reading and studying His Word daily. Feeding on His Word as a starving person feeds on food.

Here is a declaration that you should read out loud. It declares who you are in Christ and who Christ is in you: "I am a child of the King of kings, the Lord of lords and the Lord of Host. I am a representative of His kingdom everywhere I go and to everyone I see. With the help of the Holy Spirit I will represent God and His kingdom to the best of my ability. For it is God's will fulfilled in and through me!"
