Three Bible Medicines
by Leonard Granger

There may be more stories of medicines in the Bible, but we read in the New Testament where the three wise men visited baby Jesus and left gifts. Matthew 2:11, " And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down and worshipped him; and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts: gold, and frankincense, and myrrh."

I had never thought of the three valuable gifts from the wise men, as items having a medical connection. but thought all of them as like gold and of equal value. So found it an interesting search to reveal the true value of these cherished items, presented to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

First, Gold -- The wise men gave our Lord this precious metal we all know about and a few people get gold dental fillings today. However, over 5,000 years ago it was used in Egypt as the Egyptians ingested gold for mental. bodily, spiritual purification and to restore youth. The Alchemists of Alexandria developed an "elixir" pill made of liquid gold and it was extremely popular in medieval Europe to " comfort sore limbs ". the early reference to arthritis. Today. medical uses of gold has expanded greatly around the world. It is used in surgery to patch damaged blood vessels, nerves, bones, and membranes. It now is being used in the treatment of several kinds of cancer, in men prostate cancer and women ovarian cancer. Gold vapor lasers are used in photodynamic therapy help seek out and destroy cancerous cells without harming the their healthy neighbors.

Second, Frankincense -- For centuries men have wondered what made frankincense so precious that the wise men of the New Testament gave it to the baby Lord Jesus? It has a long history, going back thousands of years, and was a component used in incense and ancient rituals in Jerusalem's sacred temples. According to the Hebrew Bible. they also discovered that the substance derived from the gummy sap that oozes out of Boswellia and Commiphora trees, when the bark is cut, had a medical use. Archaeological and textual evidence by researchers have found that frankincense has antiseptic properties that were effective remedies for everything, from toothaches to leprosy and was a reliable treatment over 5,000 years ago.

Third, Myrrh -- This essential oil has been part of the medical practice in traditional therapies for millennia. Ancient Egypt used myrrh to treat hay fever and herpes and the Greeks used it as an antiseptic for soldiers with battle wounds. The three wise men, traveling long distance over the barren, hot, dry desert may have used myrrh for the strength it provides when in its dry form, as it is edible and often chewed like gum. Today, researchers all over the world have studies underway for the benefits of myrrh in many fields of medicine.

Today, we often read of new medical discoveries that use gold, frankincense or myrrh as an ingredient of a manufactured pill that will solve our medical problem. Our gracious and loving Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who received as a gift the three Bible medicines, gave Himself as the ultimate Gift of God for all who put faith in Him as Savior and King, for the healing of the soul from the curse of sin. Man's greatest need is a Savior who can fill the emptiness of heart and soul. In Matthew 11: 28-30 we read,,,,,"come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart; and ye shall find rest unto your s ouls. For my yoke is easy. and my burden is light. "

I thank you Lord for providing medical doctors that pray to you for your guidance and protection before they perform medical procedures and prescribe medicines. God's Word the Bible holds the answers if we spend the time to read and meditate on the valuable words.

Trust this Sunday we will all be in the church of our choice worshiping our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
