How Deep Is Your Hole?
by Steve Countryman

This truth was revealed to me years ago and sums up man's sinful nature. Sinning is like falling into a hole. You know the kind, hunters have used them to trap their prey for centuries. They dig a hole and cover it up waiting for the prey to fall in. In this case the hole/trap/pit is set waiting for you to fall in. Some people stand close to the edge and stumble into temptation causing them to fall in. Others believe the lies that cover the hole and wind up in the trap. Still others see the hole and decide to go all out and do back flips into the trap.

Everyone ends up in their hole for we are all born into a sinful world. It's about what happens while you are there in your hole that matters. You look around and the only thing in the hole with you is a shovel. The hole is deep enough that you can't climb out of it for there is no escape just you and your shovel. Now that you are trapped Satan's plan for you is to keep you digging your hole deeper. Being held captive in your hole is being a prisoner and a slave to sin.

But how does he do that? By the lies that he constantly feeds you. So long as you never take responsibility for being in your hole there you will stay. He knows that if you continue to blame others for being in your hole then you will continue to dig it deeper. Now add to that a big helping of un-forgiveness, bitterness, hatred, loathing and jealousy and now your hole just got deeper. The truth about being in a hole is the more you dig the deeper you go and the less light you have for darkness surrounds you!

It's as if Satan keeps trading out your shovel for larger ones for you to use. Stripping away your hope and your future. In your hole loneliness and suffering are your companions. Try as you might all of your attempts at freedom just seem to make your hole deeper. Getting rescued from your trap is your only hope, but who can save you? Lies, deception and compromising have all played their part in keeping you in your hole. Surely death is the only future that awaits the trapped prey.

Born again believers are not immune to the hole of sinning. Falling back into old sins and bad habits will cause you to stumble back into the pit. Friends, family members, coworkers, spouses or schoolmates can also pull you back into the trap.

Galatians 5:1 "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." Isaiah 61:1 "The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners."

Isn't it about time that you put down that shovel and stop digging your hole deeper? Are you tired of being lied to and deceived? Wouldn't a good dose of truth be helpful in getting you out of your hole? There's only One who can save you and His name is Jesus! All it takes is for you to call out for His help and salvation. "Jesus save me!" Being stuck in your hole isn't part of God's plan for your life but freedom is!
