Jesus - The Soon Coming King
by Jerry Ousley

This was the day! Our grandparents were coming to visit and we could hardly wait. We got up early and expected nearly every car that went by to be them. The day drug on and on but finally that evening they arrived. Hugs and kisses followed. We had visited them at least once per year and as a child I normally spent a week or two of my summer there but it was a rare treat for them to drive all the up to Garrett Indiana (above Fort Wayne where we lived at the time) to see us.

The visit was wonderful. I remember that it was on a Friday evening when they arrived and we had to share our favorite Friday program with them Gilligan's Island (remember that show? and I'm not talking about the reruns but the regular weekly half hour program).

The point is that we were watching, waiting, and expecting them to come and they did! Just the same, we should be eagerly expecting another visitor the arrival of none other than Jesus Christ. He promised that He was coming back to get us, taking us home to forever be with Him. Jesus said in John 14:3, "And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also." What a promise! This promise was also made by an angel on the day He ascended up to Heaven on the cloud in Acts 1:11 which says, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven." So He is coming back.

I know there are a lot of varying opinions in the Christian world as to just when this is going to take place, how and so forth and I'm not going into all of that today. For now let's just agree that He is coming back. I do know that His return isn't something that we should dread or beg to put off. Some have sung that song entitled "Wait a Little Longer, Please Jesus." It may seem like a noble thought because the song is asking the Lord to delay His return so as to win loved ones to Christ, but it is contrary to what our Lord told the Apostle John in the last chapter of the book of Revelation. Several times John said, "Come quickly." Now it's been around two thousand years since He left. That doesn't sound like He's coming quickly but let me assure you that is but a blink of the eye with God. He is coming soon enough. We should be eagerly watching and waiting for His return because for those of us who have given ourselves to Him it will be the greatest day of our lives.

We don't really know exactly when He's coming we just know that He's coming. Luke 12:40 says, "Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect." Again, we just need to be ready.

There's an old song that I believe reflects these thoughts wonderfully. It says,

Soon and Very Soon

Soon and very soon,
We are going to see the King,
Soon and very soon,
We are going to see the King!
Soon and very soon,
We are going to see the King!
Hallelujah, Hallelujah,
We're going to see the King!

{Other Verses}:

There'll be no sorrow there . . .

We'll all be happy up there . . .
