Don't Sleep Like Others Do
by Ngozi Nwoke

Don't allow the day to overtake you unawares! It will be most horrifying! The hand writing on wall is very explicit - the Lord's Day is at hand. How ready are you? This article is a call to be alert all the time.

But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night. But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation - 1 Thessalonians 5:4-8 (NKJV, emphasis mine).

The world is going through a lot of uncertainties, confusion, sorrows and pain. Many people are mourning, yet some are celebrating. But the most devastating thing about all these things is that many people are not seeing the spiritual implications of what is happening. They are basing all their anger, debates, questions and answers, etc. on physical interpretations of what is happening. Brethren, the day of the Lord is at the door. There is so much darkness now (Isaiah 60:2).

People are living as though everything ends here on earth, unfortunately some Christians inclusive. People are running after money, comfort, and power and not considering the will of God in all these. Jesus is coming for a church without spot, wrinkles nor blemish (Ephesians 5:27). Are your services acceptable unto God? (Romans 12:1, Hebrews 12:28) What testimony is God giving of you now? (Job 1:8, Matthew 25:14-28) These should be paramount in your heart at this time.

You are not to sleep as others at this time. It is time to be sober and watchful in prayer and in the word of God. You are a child of light and not of night. Build up your faith and love in God, obeying all His instructions. You are to run after souls, praising God as a life style and doing things that will please Him (Colossians 1:10). It is time to first seek the kingdom of God, so that every other thing will be added unto you (Matthew 6:33).

This season calls for consistent spiritual alertness. Our redeemer is going to come at a time we may not expect (Matthew 24:44), it may even be now! Don't be crowded with the things happening now; be focused and vigilant, so that you will not be devoured by the enemy (1 Peter 5:8). Live as a person who will give account of his life on earth (Romans 14:12).

Is it a time to fear? Not all. As a child of light, you are to expect the Lord's coming with excitement (Titus 2:11-14). He is coming to take you to where He has prepared for you in heaven (John 14:3). Only those who have spots, wrinkles or blemishes are to fear, but thank God you can be clean NOW. Surrender to Jesus and make clean your ways before Him.

The conclusion of the matter is that the best thing to do is live your life as if Christ is coming this moment, walk in the Spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh (Galatians 5:16-26).
