I PRAY FOR YOU
by Veronica Mello

by shelley kaye

five years later
as the flags go up
the smoke returns
inside our memories

I pray for you
as you fight for me
for us
our freedom
our laws
our rights

fighting for what your heart
believes in

yes, some may be against you
thinking
and saying
you shouldn't still
be over there
I think those people are
just scared
that this war
might never end
if we don't end it now

yes, I want you to come home
to be with your families
many have died
and it must stop
but
I believe you
are doing what's right
and what's good

I believe
in you
and why you are there

I remember exactly where I was
and what I was doing
when that first plane
flew straight into the building
with shock
anger
despair
sadness
the blue cloudless skies
turning into thick black smoke
where we couldn't even see the sun

as the flags went up
the darkness began to clear

five years later
as the flags go up
the smoke returns
as memories

yet the sun shines on
with hope
because of you

I write this to thank you
I pray for you
as you fight for us

and hope

as the flag still waves proudly....
