Over the River and through the land…
No, I’m not reminiscing about a trip to Grandma's house.
As a child, I didn’t need to cross over a river on my way to visit Grandma & Grandpa Ford. I just crossed Holtz’s yard. Nor was there a river to cross when visiting Grandma & Grandpa Ferris; instead, I had a road side view of the famed Erie Canal.
Over the River and through the land…
This was a journey from the other side of the River, a faith walk to the Promised Land.
“And Joshua said to all the people, ‘Thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘Your fathers, including Terah, the father of Abraham and the father of Nahor, dwelt on the other side of the Riverin old times; and they served other gods. Then I took your father Abraham from the other side of the River, led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his descendants and gave him Isaac (Joshua 24:2-3 NKJV).”
God guided Abraham away from one side of the River and away from false gods.
“Now therefore, fear the Lord, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt. Serve the Lord (Joshua 24:14 NKJV)!”
