Gold Pieces
by PamFord Davis

I recently saw a strange sign in a storefront window.

It read, ‘We do not accept cash.’ Needless to say, it caught my attention; I’m familiar with stores refusing personal checks but this restriction was new to me. Barter, anyone?

During the gold rush days, gold was likely a common form of exchange. I’ve seen old prospectors in Westerns; they paid for goods and services with gold dust, nuggets and gold pieces.

‘We don’t accept gold.’  I don’t think so!

“Instruction from Your lips is better for me
than thousands of gold and silver pieces (Psalm 119:72 HCSB).”

Oh, that we would seek His instruction; such wealth cannot be calculated.

“The fear of the Lord is pure,
enduring forever;
the ordinances of the Lord are reliable
and altogether righteous.
They are more desirable than gold—
than an abundance of pure gold;
and sweeter than honey,
which comes from the honeycomb.
In addition, Your servant is warned by them;
there is great reward in keeping them (Psalm 19:9-11 HCSB).”

Oh, that we would pray for His wisdom…

“Get wisdom—
how much better it is than gold (Proverbs 16:16a HCSB).”
