The Pits
by PamFord Davis

Having a pity party?

I’ve had more than my share. The guest lists consisted of me, myself and I.

Nobody dared crash my parties.

Feeling like your life is the pits?

It can be a very deep, dark and scary place. Joseph could attest to the fact.

“So Joseph went after his brothers and found them in Dothan.

Now when they saw him afar off, even before he came near them, they conspired against him to kill him.  Then they said to one another, ‘Look, this dreamer is coming! Come therefore, let us now kill him and cast him into some pit; and we shall say, ‘Some wild beast has devoured him.’ We shall see what will become of his dreams!’

But Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands, and said, ‘Let us not kill him.’ And Reuben said to them, ‘Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit which is in the wilderness, and do not lay a hand on him’ —that he might deliver him out of their hands, and bring him back to his father (Genesis 37:17b-22 NKJV).”

The brothers did spare Joseph’s life; yet, they sold him into slavery.

The time that Joseph spent in the pit prepared him for a dungeon. Though innocent of all charges railed against him his master had him thrown into prison. It was no party but he later donned happy rags.

“Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him quickly out of the dungeon; and he shaved, changed his clothing, and came to Pharaoh (Genesis 41:14 NKJV).”

Joseph’s new address… the palace, as 2nd in command over the nation of Egypt.
