A VERY SERIOUS CRIME
by Lewis E. Thomas

She cherished me from the very day that I was born
She loved to show me off and really blow her horn!

I have not seen her in years, I wonder how she is?
She used to be very smart and a mathematical whiz.

I think I'll go and see her tomorrow if I find the time
She always showered me with love that was sublime.

Days became years as she waited and hoped I would come by
To return her awesome love before she had to die.

I just heard she had a stroke and was in Intensive Care!
I rushed to the hospital to let her know I was there.

She was in a coma and fighting a battle she would not win
Suddenly I was overwhelmed by my selfish neglectful sin!

She never regained consciousness and it became quite clear
She could not hear the "I love you" I whispered into her ear.

I watched them lower her into a cold dark grave
Now it is too late to return all that love she gave!

God sends out a warning in this simple rhyme
To take love and never return it is A VERY SERIOUS CRIME!

But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.
