Slavery
by Steve Countryman

Slavery has been around almost since the beginning of time. It has become part of the human experience. In ancient days people became slaves for numerous reasons. A conquering king would take the country he overthrew and would make slaves of the majority of its citizens. The nobles and royal families were typically thrown in prison or killed. Others were made to be servants.

If a family was in debt and couldn’t pay it back some would sell their own children into slavery to settle the debt. When food became scarce some families would sell their children so that they would have food to eat. A problem child or relative could also bring a good price once sold as a slave. A person would sometimes sell himself or herself into slavery to settle a debt. Then there are those who were kidnapped and sold as slaves.

All of these examples happened to ALL races, ethnic and religious groups. Amazing how you don’t hear about the huge number of Irish and Chinese who ended up in the U.S. as slaves. Not all slaves worked on plantations! Some were used as labor on the railroad laying track, blasting caves through rock for the trains to travel through. Others worked on roadways, trails, mining, field workers, tended flocks and rustled cattle. Others were blacksmiths, teachers, house servants, cooks, seamstresses, carpenters and just about any type of labor worker. The difference was the slave didn’t get paid!

Yes there is still slavery going on in our modern times. Women, young girls and boys sold as sex slaves. Others forced to perform hard labor as slaves in foreign lands. Some out in the open and others hidden away in camps or prisons. To think that slavery doesn’t exist in the modern world is to be naïve and uninformed.

But the real truth is that everyone who has ever lived has been a slave their entire life. Some realize it while others stay in denial. The Bible says that you are a slave to sin at birth and serve the master of this world, Satan or you are born again and have been bought with the price of Jesus’ blood spilt for mankind who accept Him as their savior! You will serve one or the other period!

There are major differences between which one you serve. The unsaved are held captive by their sins and sinful ways as they serve Satan everyday. Their miserable lives have the inevitable future in store for them…destruction and eternal damnation. Some are so tied up in their sin that they will not listen to the truth or Biblical facts. Hearing the Word of God or Jesus’ name used drives them crazy. Because with accepting the Gospel Truth comes accountability to a higher being… Jehovah God!

But serving God as a born-again believer you are a slave to Christ. With that slave/servant position comes a reality of freedom not experienced by common man. Freedom from your sinful past and past mistakes. Freedom from ALL addictions, drugs, alcohol, sex, porn, hateful and abusive behavior, anger, un-forgiveness, strife and more!

John 15:15 “I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.”

But God didn’t stop there… Ephesians 1:5 “He predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will.” We are co-heirs with Christ adopted into God’s royal family, you are a Child of the King!

Having said all this is to remind you who you are in Christ and who Christ is in you. Since accepting Christ into your life as Lord and master Jesus lives in you. That is who God sees when He looks at you. He knows that you were sinful but only sees Jesus in you, “the hope of glory”.

Unto yourself you are nothing and no one. “Apart from God I can do nothing.” Though He loves ALL mankind both sinner and saint alike and doesn’t want anyone to perish, the sinner cannot please God nor serve Him. But as His child having the righteous Jesus in me makes me righteous. Having the Holy Jesus in me makes me holy. Having the worthy Jesus in me makes me worthy. Having the ALL POWERFUL Jesus in me makes me ALL POWERFUL. None of which helps me if I don’t first believe it, accept it and receive it!

John 14-12-14 12”Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”

It is time for ALL of God’s children to start acting like a “Child of the King” everyday!
