They Came Bearing Gifts
by PamFord Davis

Our Ford family opened presents on Christmas Eve. The gift distribution began after the arrival of Grandma & Grandpa Ford along with Aunt Jessie & Uncle Wallace Ford. They came bearing gifts.

As a child, I wanted toys. Because Aunt Jessie worked in Dey Brothers Department Store, Syracuse, she gave quality gifts of clothing.

Wise men traveled to Bethlehem; they came bearing gifts of great value. The King of the Jews deserved the very best.

“When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.

When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh (Matthew 2:9-11 KJV).”

Each gift had great significance.

The gold was given in recognition of Jesus role as king. The frankincense acknowledged divinity; myrrh, his humanity (death and burial). *Based on ‘The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah’ by Alfred Edersheim (1825-1889) Book II, Chapter VIII.
