Chewing Food Properly - A Simple Way To Improve Your Health
by Tesse Wilson

Chew your food properly. We have heard this many times as children. But we have also seen Cookie Monster bite and swallow.

Both conventional and naturopathic health practitioners agree on the importance of thorough chewing of food before swallowing for optimum health.

The process of proper or thorough chewing allows for the breaking down of food into smaller particles for easier digestion.

What is proper chewing?
Proper chewing is slow chewing.  Most of us would know the old adage that we should chew our food thirty-two (32) times. However, the number of times we chew food will depend on the type, how soft or dense the food is.
When we eat(chew) too quickly the food is not broken down properly and our stomachs have to work harder to digest the food and absorb the nutrients.

According to Science Daily  Dr. Richard Mattes, a professor of foods and nutrition has stated,"...the more you chew, the less is lost and the more is retained in the body".

So someone can have healthy meals but if the food is not chewed properly the body will not get the full benefit of all the nutrients the food contains.

Let us remember as we seek ways to maintain or improve our health; it is not only about what we eat, how much we eat but also how well we chew our food before we swallow it.
