Vigilant
by PamFord Davis

It was a typical theme in old Western movies and TV programs...

The man of the house was away hunting game. Alone, his wife hoped for the best and prepared for the worst; Indian war parties had been spotted in the vicinity. She was vigilant; before going to bed she made sure the door was securely latched and all windows were boarded over. As a safeguard, she always kept ‘Big Betsy’ (the family rifle) within reach. Was she afraid?

The dangers were real. Indians could shoot flaming arrows at her log cabin while she slept. Of course she was afraid; but she did not give in to her fears.

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV).”

I have a real enemy. Satan is on the prowel; yet, I must overcome my fears. Jesus is away but He sent the Holy Spirit. God has provided me with everything I need to defend myself against the devil and his wicked spirits.

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;  above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God (Ephesians 6:12-17 NKJV).”
