Gone Fishing
by PamFord Davis

‘Store Closed. Gone Fishing.’

When was the last time you picked up a fishing pole?

You can’t remember? Me either.

To be frank, fishing is not something I enjoy all that much; yet, many men, women and children have a hankering for casting a line or net.

Ya’ wanna’ go fishin'?

“From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’

And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.  Then He said to them, ‘Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men (Matthew 4:17-19 NKJV).”

Commercial fishermen by trade, they were most likely taken aback by Jesus’ claim. What did He mean, fishers of men? They both had much to learn.

Did Andrew catch on?

“One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, ‘There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two small fish, but what are they among so many (John 6:8-9 NKJV)?”

Andrew witnessed a miracle. (John 6:10-14

Peter? He has been called the Big Fisherman.

At Pentecost, Peter preached to a crowd of thousands. (Acts 2:14-40)

He drew in the net…

“And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, ‘Be saved from this perverse generation.’ Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them (Acts 2:40-41 NKJV).”
