Postman
by Richard L. Provencher

His jaw quivered as I

strode forth--

boldness my command.

Tracing footprints

across the grass

he scampered quickly as I

dared reach

for the gate’s lock.

We joined in impatient stares--

bared teeth vs nerves no

longer made of steel.

A pert schnauzer and a large

one at that

each of us willing to hold

our position

until the moment his

rush began. Then I slam the gate

and hurry to anywhere I can.
