Accurate Scales
by PamFord Davis

Uncle Alex was routinely packaging meat behind the grocery counter.  I was in Rice’s Grocery with Dad often. Sometimes, while visiting my cousins Pat and Don, I was sent there on an errand.

As I recall, a pound of ground beef was frequently on her grocery lists. He reached inside the meat cooler and scooped out ground beef, placing it onto a piece of white paper. From there, he moved it to a set of scales.

His estimated weights were impressive; his many years of experience gave him the advantage.

“Dishonest scales are an abomination to the Lord,
But a just weight is His delight (Proverbs 11:1 NKJV).”

Uncle Alex made any needed corrections, adding or removing meat until the scales balanced.  When satisfied the weight was right, he folded the white paper around the meat and closed it securely with white twine. Finishing his work, he wrote the weight on the outside of the package.

Honest (accurate) scales reveal the accurate weight. Belshazzar saw the writing on the wall!

… “and the God who holds your breath in His hand and owns all your ways, you have not glorified. Then the fingers of the hand were sent from Him, and this writing was written.

‘And this is the inscription that was written:

MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.

This is the interpretation of each word. MENE: God has numbered your kingdom, and finished it; TEKEL: You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting; PERES: Your kingdom has been divided, and given to the Medes and Persians (Daniel 5:23b-28 NKJV).”
